the piwakawaka, otherwise known as the new zealand fantail, is the only fantail species endemic to new zealand. this bird is insectivorous and often catches small insects in flight. piwakawakas are incredibly active and are rarely spotted sitting still; they are also very bold birds that rarely show fear of humans. the ‘fantail’ portion of their name comes from their tail, which is often displayed in a fanned-out position.
